Ok, so I FINALLY got the Transformers quilt basted yesterday and need to work on quilting it. I had planned to just go diagonally both ways across it, but now I'm having second thoughts and wondering if just going in the ditch around it might be better. The only thing is, I think I would drive myself mad with all the starting and stopping involved with that and am trying to make this as painless as possible.

Mom had said to go in the ditch and another friend made the same pattern and said ...

I'm trying to figure out how I'm suposed to cut these Transformer pillows I'm gonna make for my brother for his birthday/Christmas (was just gonna wrap that and his wall hanging in the same box and tell him I combined the two.) I was just going to take the cover off another throw pillow I made YEARS ago, measure that and the pillow, and figure it out from there. The only thing is, I just took the cover off. The size is not marked on the pillow, and it's about 15 inches square. Now, I KNOW 15" ...

The body and trim are 42 to 44 wide but the other part is only 40: wide. Should I just trim the excess off? Or sew more onto the sleeve? I have 3 cases cut right now and would like to proceed but am unsure how. The width of the backing fabric like a couple inches too narrow. I have plenty of the backing fabric so fabric is not a problem, but I don't want to waste it. I though of cutting a 6 in strip WOF to the selvage edge of what I have already cut, but I think I would still have a small area to patch but I suppose I could cover it with the label. I am not going to undo, I am going to learn to live with it. Has anyone else had the same problem and how did you deal with it when it came to quilting? I'll be machine quilting this one, basting on the floor. Gah, I don't know what I am asking, I just hope it turns out okay. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful bubbly quilt, and the ...

I went to a lecture called Simple Strategies for Scrap Quilts by Lynn Roddy Brown at the Houston Show. I'll try to share some of the tips I noted...scribbled some notes...lol. Some of this you all probably know, but since I'm pretty much a beginner...it helped me!

Before you start:

1.) COLOR VALUE is the most important thing to consider when making scrap quilts. Sort your scraps in to color values....light, medium, and dark. The placement of the values is what creates your design/patterns.

With piecing by cutting squares, drawing a diagonal line down the middle, sewing 1/4" on each side of the line and then cutting apart I'd be cutting my squares at 2 3/8" for the size units I'm making. If I cut squares then cut them on the diagonal like it is traditionally done..again I cut at 2 3/8". ...

Title: Safety pin basting

Post by: Pawstoquilt on May 17, 2008, 07:58:52 AM

This morning I have been safety pin basting a baby quilt. I bought a pkg. of 1" brass pins and I don't think I like them. They seem "sticky" pushing them thru the layers. Are there pins that are better than brass? These pins were not cheap pins. I think my preference is still thread basting.
